The meaning and importance of Allah Y Ster in Islam

The invocation "Allah Y Ster" is commonly used by Muslims to invoke the protection and discretion of Allah in the face of the misfortunes and trials of life. In this article, we will explore the meaning of this expression, its use in different dialects, as well as its role in the Islamic faith.

Allah Y Ster: What does this expression mean?

Allah Y Ster is an Arabic phrase that can be translated literally as "may Allah cover" or "may Allah protect", « may Allah conceal », « may Allah veil ». It refers to the Capacity of Allah to protect His faithful from sins, misfortunes and trials while preserving their honour and their dignity. This protection is closely linked to the name of Allah Al Sitir, which means "The One who veils" or "The One who conceals". Thus, by saying "Allah Y Ster", one asks Allah to cover us with His Protection and to conceal our faults from the eyes of others. One also asks Him to place a veil between calamities and us.

Misfortune and trials in Islam

In the Islamic religion, trials and difficulties are considered tests sent by Allah to test the faith and patience of believers in order to purify them of their sins or raise them in ranks in Paradise. It is therefore important to react with resilience and determination in the face of the challenges of life. The invocation Allah Y Ster allows Muslims to remember the presence and help of Allah in these difficult moments, thus encouraging them to persevere.

Allah y ster in the Quran

The invocation does not appear in the Quran, but the word sitr, for its part, is found, among other places, in Surah Al Kahf, which the believer is invited to read every Friday. During the passage about the servant of Allah, Dhul Qarnayn (the man with the two horns), at verse 90, Allah reveals that a people had no means of protecting themselves from the sun. It is the word sitra that is used in this verse to designate the protection against the sun (which they lacked):

Then, he followed another route. Until he reached the farthest point of the East, where he saw the sun rising over a people to whom We had given no means of protecting themselves from it. So it was. We encompassed with Our Knowledge all that was taking place there.

There are, in the Arabic language and within the Book of Allah, many other terms to designate a veil that conceals or protects. This is, for example, the case for the veil that Allah placed between the people of Maryam and her, peace be upon her, in order to protect her from them. Many other words, for their part, have a more negative connotation, with the meaning of « enveloping to prevent from (understanding etc)». Here are some of these verses:

  • Hijab in Surah Maryam at verse 17
  • Ghichawa in verse 7 of Surah 2 THE COW / AL-BAQARA)
  • Ghita in Surah Al Kahf, the veil over the eyes of those who do not remember Allah is described
  • Akinna at verse 25 in Surah 6, Allah has placed veils that surround the hearts of the disbelievers so that they do not understand the Quran
