Allah y chafiha : Merits and good deeds towards our sick

What should one do towards our sick according to the Sunnah ? This is what those who hope for the reward of Allah ardently seek. Islam strongly recommends taking care of vulnerable people, and all the more so the sick.  The prophetic Tradition never ceases to encourage Muslims in this direction.

« Visit the sick and follow the funeral processions, for this reminds you of the hereafter. » Hadith reported by Bukhari

Thus, it is recommended by the Prophet and Messenger of Allah, peace and salutation be upon him, to show compassion and propriety when visiting our sick. If the act of visiting people weakened by illness is very meritorious in Islam, it nonetheless remains subject to certain rules that must be respected as best as possible in order to take care not to cause any harm to the sick person during our visit.

  • Ask permission to visit so as not to disturb him
  • Invoke for him in his presence with one of the invocations learned
  • Ask how he feels and whether he needs anything at all
  • Comfort him with gentle and pleasant words. Thus avoid anything that would disturb him and do not speak of things that would trouble him or frighten him
  • Keep your visit short so as not to tire him
  • Remind him that this illness is a good for him. According to a hadith reported by Bukhari the prophet, salla Allah alayhi wa salam, said to a sick bedouin whom he had gone to visit : « There is no harm. It is an occasion to purify you of your sins ».
  • Remind him of the Greatness of Allah and the Hereafter, and thus give him confidence in the path of healing.

Another action recommended by the Sunnah that helps the sick person in search of healing :

  • Give alms. « Treat your sick with alms! » hadith hassan reported by Abu Cheikh

May Allah Azza wa Jal grant a full and perfect healing without after-effects to all our sick brothers and sisters throughout the world and expiate their sins through their patience in this trial. Amin
