DadoSurah Al-Kawthar (in Arabic: سورة الكوث), translated into English as « The Abundance », is the 108th surah of the Holy Quran. It is the shortest surah. It is composed of only three verses. However, it is extremely rich in teachings, like all the rest of the Holy Quran.
Surah 108 takes its name from its first verse: « Indeed, We have granted you Abundance. » Surah Al-Kawthar is also known by other names such as « An-Nahr » or « inna a'taynak al kawthar ».
Al-Kawthar is a specifically Quranic term. Overall, Al-Kawthar signifies the meaning of an abundance of goods, both in this life and in the Next.
Al-Kawthar is also the name of a river in Paradise, whose banks are of gold and whose bed is of pearls and rubies, its earth is more fragrant than musk, its water is sweeter than honey and whiter than snow.
« Do you know what Al-Kawthar is? '' They said: ''Allah knows more than any other than Him, and His Messenger knows more than we do.'' He said what means: ''It is a river that my Lord has granted me. It contains many blessings. It is a basin to which my community will come on the Day of Judgement. It has cups the number of the stars'' ».
[Reported by Muslim]
According to Ibn 'Abbas, Aisha and Abdallah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them all, Al-Kawthar also refers to the great good, prophethood, the Heavenly Book, the Quran, the large number of Companions, of disciples or of descendants, given by God to His Messenger (sws).
According to Ibn Ishaq, Surah Al-Kawthar was proclaimed during the Meccan period, shortly before the Isra and Mi'raj (the night journey and the ascension of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, departing from Jerusalem up to the seventh heaven). It ranks 15th in the order of Revelation. There is divergence among the scholars regarding the revelation of this surah. Some say it is Meccan because the Meccans mocked the Prophet (sws). Others say it is Medinan because verse 2 alludes to the Eid prayer, which was prescribed in Medina. And still others say it is both Meccan and Medinan, because it would have been revealed twice, in Mecca and in Medina.
Nevertheless, many agree that Surah 108 was revealed to console and encourage the Prophet (sws), while he was facing a multitude of painful incidents and many taunts from his enemies. At that time, the Prophet (sws) and his wife Khadija had just lost their son 'Abdullah. Because He therefore had no male descendant, the enemies of Islam mocked the Messenger of Allah. Abu Lahab was pleased with the sadness of the Prophet (sws). He shouted in the streets of Mecca « the descendants of the Prophet (sws) have been cut off ». Allah therefore revealed this surah to comfort the Prophet (sws).
Through this verse, Allah reveals His immeasurable abundance. This is why the man of faith, just like His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), knows that he can expect the faithfulness of Allah and that in scarcity as in blessing he will always be able to count on the abundant Love of Allah.
In Surah Al-Kawthar, Allah indicates to the Prophet (sws) that He will always be at his side, that He will never belittle him. All the blessings that Allah has given to the Prophet (sws) are infinite and eternal, whether it be the Quran, Islam, the Ka'ba, etc. The purpose of these verses was to strengthen the determination of the Prophet (sws) and also to stimulate the determination of the Muslim community by reminding them of the promise of their Lord.
Allah is the Only One who can grant such abundance, so glory and thanks should be offered to Him and Him alone. The verses of Surah Al-Kawthar remind us that we must remain firm; our prayers are only for Allah and our sacrifices too are for Him alone. Allah is the God of abundance, He grants us everything He considers necessary for our life. We must learn to recognise that we will always be able to benefit from His Abundant Love and His Faithfulness in our needs. Far more than anything this world could offer us, we must live in total trust in the One who loves us more than anything and who will provide for all our needs.
As the shortest surah of the Holy Quran, Surah Al-Kawthar is easy to memorise in order to be recited in prayers. Being brief, Surah 108 is also one of the first taught to children and to people newly converted to Islam. However, one should know that reciting this surah brings us many merits and virtues. Moreover, whoever reads Surah Al-Kawthar, Allah will give him to drink of the water of Kawthar on the Day of Resurrection!
