DadoSurah Ta-Ha, the twentieth chapter of the Holy Quran, comprising 135 verses, is a Meccan Surah. Its main subject being the account of the life of the Prophet Musa (Moses), it addresses at times the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, at times the people of Mecca, but also the Jewish people, even though the Quran is a universal Divine Message.
Surah 20 begins with the disjointed letters, called Muqatta'a, whose meaning is perfectly known to Allah alone.
Ta-Ha is also one of the names of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.
Surah Ta-Ha bears this resemblance to Surah Yusuf in that the latter consists almost exclusively of the account of the Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), just as Surah Ta-Ha relates that of Musa (Moses), peace be upon them.
The first verse of this Surah addresses Muhammad, Prophet of Islam, peace and blessings be upon him, to comfort him in the heavy task he had of calling his people to Allah.
Verse 2 We have not sent down the Quran upon you that you be distressed,
He indeed had this heavy responsibility of delivering the Message of Allah, but his Lord reassures him by telling him that He did not send down His Word (the Quran) upon him to put him in difficulty.
The notion of hardship contained in the word tachqa (chaqawa: difficulty, painful toil) is linked with the word chaqqa which means hypocrisy, failure. Allah tells him that He does not wish to bring him to failure through this heavy task.
It is the announcement of a success to come, for this Surah was revealed in Mecca where the Muslims were undergoing harsh trials from the Quraysh people. The situation was deteriorating and Allah announces to them through this verse that it was going to improve. Soon the Muslims would migrate to Medina where the Muslim society would be built in a place where they would find peace.
The verses that follow enumerate the Attributes of Allah, who alone knows the extent of secrets and what is even more hidden. They could not know in advance the state in which they would find themselves when emigrating to Medina, but Allah announces to them through this beginning of Surah Ta-Ha that it is in Him that they must place their trust.
The mission of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was to continue to call to Allah without worrying about those who do not believe. And this is expressed by the verse:
Verse 3 But only as a reminder for those who fear (Allah),
Only the hearts of those who fear their Lord humble themselves. This is the description of the Companions towards whom Allah asks him to focus.
In this beginning of Surah Ta-Ha, a true introduction to the account of Musa, a parallel can be drawn between the Earth and the Elevated Heavens, and, the King of the Universe Allah and the one who raised himself to the point of taking himself for the god of men, Firaoun (Pharaoh) who was the king of Egypt in the time of Musa (Moses).
By recalling that Allah is the One who created the Heavens, the Earth and what is between the two but also what is beneath the moist soil, Allah recalls that He is the One who established Himself above the seven Heavens, the One who reigns over all that is on the Earth and the sky and what is between the two. Indeed, the king of Egypt Firaoun mocked Musa, peace be upon him, and the manner in which he had received the revelation, by asking that there be « built for him structures high enough to climb up and go speak to the god of Musa ».
The power and reign of Allah are presented in this Surah in a unique way, for in other chapters of the Quran Allah often says that all that is in the Heavens and on the Earth belong to Him, but here, He adds what is beneath the Earth as if to recall that Firaoun, taking himself for a god among men, will also find himself beneath the earth. No matter how he acts, and this is the subject that will be treated in the second part of this Surah, he too will go beneath the earth.
Part 1 of Surah Ta-Ha verses 1 to 9, thus addresses the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him:
Allah knows everything
Call upon Him
Trust Him
From verse 9 onward, the story of the Prophet Musa is revealed.
The story of Musa can also be found in Surah 26 Ash-Shu'ara, and in Surah 28 Al-Qasas. Each time it is a progression in the life of the Prophet Musa that the believer reads, for these are additional details to this Surah Ta-Ha that are added in the other Surahs.
Allah relates the day of the « encounter » with his Lord for Kalim Allah, epithet of Musa which can be translated as the Interlocutor of Allah, since he is the only prophet to have spoken directly with Allah, to Him the Majesty and the Glory.
Having traveled in the middle of the night with his family, Musa, peace be upon him, saw a fire on the mountain and asked his family to wait for him. The word Inni, « indeed, truly I have seen a fire » attests with conviction that he saw what the others could not see. He had to climb the mount to go see what was happening, and this is expressed by fallama, which indicates that he took time to get there.
Indeed, the subtlety of the Arabic language brings details to the account that unfortunately could not be perceived in the French translation.
Allah calls out to him directly by his name, which astonishes him since he is in a valley he does not know. Allah in these verses 11 to 15 acts step by step with His prophet. The first commandment that Musa receives is to remove his sandals, which is a lesson in the order of conduct that he receives, an education. Then He informs him that He has chosen him. Allah, to Him the Glory and the Majesty, teaches us at the beginning of this Surah that He knows secrets and what is even more hidden. He knows the deep reasons for which He chose Musa, peace be upon him. Ikhtar is a verb which means that he was chosen because there is good in him.
In verse 14 Allah declares in a powerful way, as He does nowhere else in the entire Quran, His Authority, then, He asks him to call to Him and to pray.
(Moses) Musa has this commandment in common with Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, who received the same order from Allah when he found himself closest to Him, above the seven heavens, during his ascension.
In verse 15 the announcement that the Hour is soon to arrive and that it is barely hidden brings the urgency of obeying this divine order which is to pray. In itself, prayer is the best means of remembering the Hour of the Last Judgment. And in the same way the absence of obedience to this commandment of prayer is quite revealing of the abandonment of this remembrance of the Hour, in one's heart and in one's mind. In other words, someone who does not pray is someone who does not remember the Hour enough.
If Allah barely hides it, it is to let us work, make efforts in the hope of His Supreme Reward.
In verse 16 Allah asks Musa to let no one distract him from this commandment which is prayer. The one who is likely to distract him is described as someone who follows his desires.
After the account of the story of the Prophet Musa facing Pharaoh, the Day of the Last Judgment is described at length and Surah Ta-Ha ends on the reminder of the story of Adam.
